The M-65 Field Jacket : Third Pattern
A garment of purpose and provenance, the M-65 Field Jacket is a classic of mid-century military design, introduced in 1965 and immediately distinguished by its understated utility and enduring form. This vintage issue, crafted by Alpha Industries under U.S. Government contract, is presented here in Medium Short, suitable for heights up to 67 inches and chest measurements between 37 and 41 inches.
This particular example is an early Third Pattern M-65, introduced in the early 1970s during a transitional phase in military production. While adopting the simplified pocket flaps and removal of the internal button tab found in earlier patterns, this version retains the shoulder epaulettes and brass main zipper of its predecessors. A combination rarely seen in later iterations. As such, it stands as a snapshot of a moment in the jacket’s evolution, where utility met refinement without full concession to streamlining.
Constructed for cold-weather deployment, the jacket features a wind-resistant cotton/nylon blend shell, a stand collar with zip compartment (designed to house a hood), and four generously proportioned front pockets that balance function with a clean, structured silhouette. Reinforced shoulders and sleeves speak to the garment’s versatile intent, while its quietly authoritative presence lends itself with ease to modern wear.
Notably, this jacket bears a large number "1" applied to the reverse. A bold and somewhat enigmatic detail. While the exact reason for its application is unknown, it adds a singular character to the piece and hints at a life once lived beyond standard issue.
