U.S. Customers : Duties and Taxes Update
From 29 August 2025, the U.S. removed the “de minimis” threshold, which used to let low-value parcels enter without duties or, often, state tax. This affects virtually every shipment from the UK, including orders from The Merchant Fox.
We want to make this simple and show what it means in practice, using two of our favourites as examples.
What’s changed
Before, parcels under US$800 could often be delivered with no customs charges. That is no longer the case. Almost every shipment may now attract:
Customs duty – a percentage of the product price depending on what it is.
State tax – varies by U.S. state and can apply even on smaller orders.
Courier handling fees – applied when the courier advances duty on your behalf.
In short: you should expect extra costs at delivery unless duties are included at checkout.
How we ship
We ship via DHL Express:
Standard import: DHL clears the parcel and collects duties, taxes, and any handling fees when it arrives.
Delivered Duty Paid (DDP): Duties and taxes are calculated at checkout so you pay one price and nothing else on delivery. This is easier for you, though a little more involved on our side.
A worked example — two products
Here’s how it might look for two popular items:
1) Fox Cricket Club Ecru Sweater with Green & Gold Stripes — £235
Estimated duty (14%) = £32.90
Subtotal before courier fees or state tax = £267.90
2) The No.1 Jacket: Sunseeker Edition — £750
Estimated duty (10%) = £75
Subtotal before courier fees or state tax = £825
These are examples to show the scale — actual duties depend on the product type and your state of delivery.
How we’re helping
Clear guidance: We will continue shipping via DHL and provide advice on expected duties.
Support on request: If you want, we can work out a landed cost for your chosen piece before you order.
Looking ahead: We’re exploring a tax and duty calculator at checkout so you can see an estimate for your order instantly.
Our aim is to make sure U.S. customers can shop with confidence, without surprises at the door.
