Oak Bark Leather Holford Holdall

A beautifully crafted overnight holdall cut from oak bark tanned leather. The rich colourings are from the natural tanins found in the oak bark.

The Merchant Fox has combined this rich, characterful hide with a classic style of holdall. The top piece is lined with panel hide for strength and the interior is unlined showing the natural suede. With adjustable straps and UK cast brass fittings, the Holford holdall is the epitome of understated luxury with each piece being hand cut by a master leather worker.

Beautifully proportioned yet durable, the Holford has been created by hand in Devon from leather that has been tanned at Britain’s last remaining oak bark tannery. The full grain finish enables the extraordinary character of the leather to be seen; each blemish and scar is visible, which results in something truly unique as no two bags are ever the same.

Each bag is hand-made order.

The oak bark hide used for the Holford Holdall comes from one of Britain’s oldest tanneries – it has been on the same site since Roman times. Each hide of leather is sourced from Britain, cured and tanned using natural vegetable dies and then dripped in traditional leather grease to set and enhance the wonderfully rich tones. It also makes the bag virtually waterproof.

Each piece is hand cut and stitched together using a combination of hand and machine sewing.

The character of leather will vary for every individual bag, making each one of a kind.

Before leaving the tannery our leather is treated with a blend of waxes and oils which among other things offer suppleness and water resistance. With time and use the oak bark tanned leather softens and becomes more flexible.

To maintain durability apply a hide food every 6 months or so. If used in wet conditions we recommend you maintain the water resistance of the bag with a water resistant wax. This will also avoid dye staining.
