Introducing our limited edition ikat gown

Thought to have originated from southeast Asia or the Indian subcontinent. The term "ikat" has Indonesian and Malay origin, and was introduced into European textile vocabulary back in the early 20th century, when Dutch scholars begin to study the rich textile traditions of Indonesia.

The iconic ikat design is a form of resist dyeing, where colour and pattern are applied to yarn prior to weaving.

The pattern is created by tying knots onto an unwoven warp and or weft in a particular pattern and then it is painted with dye or submerged in a dye bath. The dye cannot reach where the knots are tied and when removed they leave the yarn underneath the original colour. This take's a certain degree of planning, measurement and design so that the pattern repeats across the cloth, this is then woven on hand looms.

You can tell when a fabric is a true ikat (woven and not printed) by looking closely at the design and you will see that the pattern runs along the warp and does not overlap the weave.

This design will have a staggered vertical pattern that is slightly shifted and does not have clear edges. This is a lengthy process and is carried out by hand by an experienced weaver, no two fabrics are ever the same!
