Navy Coat of Arms Silk Scarf
The vibrant, elaborate design on this luxurious silk scarf is hand printed in navy and acid green with highlights of fuchsia. The beautiful print is recoloured from the original artwork, discovered in Fox Brothers’ archives, on canvas once used by Fox Brothers to wrap goods for export in the 18th century.
Specially recreated for The Merchant Fox, the silk twill is hand printed by silk printers who have been printing fabric in England for more than 300 years.
Each scarf is then hand rolled in France using traditional methods that have sadly died out in this country.
90 x 90 cm
Rolled and hemmed by hand in France, Britain no longer has any ‘hand rollers’
Created by master silk printers who still print by hand in Cheshire.
The design is a recreation of an emblem discovered on canvas in the Fox Brothers archive, described as ‘one of the most significant textile (company) archives in the British Isles’.
Each bale of ‘Long Ells’ (long lengths of serge cloth) was wrapped in a piece of ‘Serge’ canvas for export on ships from Topsham in Devon. 'Serge’, the lion depicted, was thought so fierce-some that pirates would steer clear of the ships with Fox’ wool that were bound for exotic shores.
This Original Coat of Arms Silk Scarf is a piece of British history.
Established in 1772, Fox Brothers is one of the UK’s oldest surviving woollen mills.
